Go and check out a local wine tasting event, but not before arming yourself with these little gems of wisdom. Be informed before rubbing shoulders with seasoned wine tasters.
Attending wine tasting events can provide you with great experience and are also a lot of fun. Sadly though, many people choose not to attend out of fear, lack of confidence in their level of knowledge or experience. But, as with everything in life, ‘you have to start somewhere,’ and ‘practice makes perfect.’
Even though wine appreciation requires some level of skill, it is not impossible to grasp the basic concepts.
During a wine tasting event, women are always served before the men. Some tastings will serve you bottled water between tastings, so you can clean your mouth out and be ready to taste the next wine being served.
When holding the wine, always handle the glass by the stem, to avoid heating it with your hands. There will also be crackers and other treats on hand as well, to help you cleanse your mouth between wine tastings and line your stomach.
As you may already know, you can tell quite a bit wine by its color. Upon attending a wine tasting event for the first time, you’ll notice that the glasses are clear, not pigmented. This allows the taster to examine the wine better, and gain a full appreciation of the experience. There should also be a white tablecloth on the table as well, aid in providing contrast to the color of the wine.
Never go by the name of the wine alone, it can easily fool you, and will cloud your judgment of the wine before tasting it.
Also, notice the more experienced wine tasters swirl the wine around in the glass before tasting it.
This may seem peculiar, but gently swirling the wine actually helps to bring out the flavor.
Most wines have been aging in bottles for long periods of time, sometimes even years. When the wine is swirled around in the glass, the swirling releases the flavors in the wine and brings them to the taster’s senses.
At wine tastings, look at the wine, smell it, then after swirling it around in the glass, taste it.
Smell plays an integral part of the process. You get a lot more from the wine by smelling it first.
Wine has an intriguing aroma, which helps to bring out the taste that wine is so renowned for.
Once you have smelled the wine, you should allow a few moments to consider the bouquet, and fully appreciate the wine in your glass.
Last but not least, you will need to know how to properly taste the wine.
Your tongue has taste buds in the front and the back, aids detection of flavors. Wine is full of flavors, but correct technique is the only way to fully appreciate its qualities.
When you put the wine in your mouth, swish it around in your mouth for a few seconds, allowing the flavors to dance across your palate.
Once your taste buds begin tasting the wine, think about what you taste. After swallowing the wine, the aftertaste that remains in your mouth will give you more of an idea as to the type and flavor of the wine.
Before you attend a wine tasting, learn as much as you can about the many different flavors and varieties of wine available. This way, you will gain a proper understanding of what to look for in taste and fragrance, as well as color. Even though you may be new to wine tasting, don’t ever pass up an opportunity to attend a wine tasting event. You will experience the world of wine tasting first hand as well as tasting wines that you may have never heard of before.
