Have you ever has a favorite wine? We all have and you may or may not know where it came from. Well below is some more history on wines and where they came from.

Many people may believe that much of the wine traditions we have today comes from France or Italy, however that is not necessarily true. Actually, Hungary has some of the oldest wine traditions in Europe compared to any other European country. Just recently we have begun to learn more about these Hungarian traditions, especially since people are starting to finally find out about everything the people of Hungary are doing with wine today. There are equally as many people who know about Hungarian wine as there is not.

Amazingly, Hungary is actually home to more than twenty wine regions, fully developed forests, vineyards, and orchards. They have many varieties of grapes to offer and what many may not know is that the vineyards have been flourishing since dating all the way back to Roman times. Hungary does have very seasonal weather, with very cold winters and extremely hot summers. Thus, producing a much diversified soul that than allows wine makers the produce a wide variety of wines.

Even though Hungary was controlled by communists at one time, there are still many wine varieties found in Hungary. Many of these vineyards produce excellent wines; however Tokay Aszu is the favorite wine of choice in Hungary and all over the world. One reason is that it is by far one of the best mean dessert wines out there. It was first discovered in the mid 17th century in Hungary and become instantly popular with the European rich and elite, the aristocrats.

Also, there were many people that loved the taste of this wine but also believed that it possessed mystical healing powers. There was no fact to it and it was strictly a rumor, it did help to bring the wine further into the for front and make it an even more popular wine choice. Tokay Aszu has become even more popular over the years in Hungary and then spreading to other areas of the world.

Another popular wine found in Hungary is Egri Bikaver, also known as Bulls Blood. Bull’s Blood is very popular with the locals and has become known around the world. The name actually comes from the color of the wine and is another amazing wine to try. It is a very dark red, with a very sweet taste. Bull’s Blood has actually been around since the 16th century and is as popular today as it was then.

If you plan on ever going to Hungary there are many places to visit to get a truly wonderful glass of wine. A definite stop you should make is to Tokay which is located in the northeast and you can get there by train by going through Budapest and arriving within a few hours. You will find many different and unique wine flavors here that will please anyone. If you decide to visit these wineries they are usually open for tours and tastings from May through to October. If you during these time you will be able to visit the underground cellars, sample many fine wine, and learn even more about the traditions, processing, and manufacturing of wine in Hungary.

If you can get a bottle of wine from Hungary to have on hand is always a good idea for special occasions. All Hungarian wines will age to perfection over the years and their wine keeps the Hungarian people and the rest of the world hungry for more.
